- What is the function and role of the institution/event you visited? What is its role in the community and its role in culture? Which culture(s) does it represent? What are its goals and mission?
Since the first settlers place their feet in American, Virginia Beach has been one of the historical meeting places that hold remarkable events. Such events include celebrating the righteous Cape Henry that helps to retrace the footstep to the forefathers at the First Landing State Park. Moreover, the Virginia Beach museum is a military aviation museum and a marine science museum that serves as home to the world’s largest collection of war planes in the flying condition (Virginia Beach Museum, 2021). It serves as homes to planes that took part in world war I and world war II, and the collection ranges from the 1910s to the 1950s (Virginia Military Aviation Museum, 2021).
The community’s role is to preserve the history of America and show people the American heritage in terms of historical adventures and the capabilities and growth since the historical time when the first visitor landed in America (Virginia Beach Museum, 2021). The museum represents a culture of scientific, historical, and performing arts that identifies the heritage of the U.S. The mission of the Virginia Beach Museum is to “preserve, restore and fly these historic aircraft and to allow a new generation to experience and learn from what their forebears have endured in the skies (Virginia Beach Museum, 2021).” The museum’s goal is to serve as the heritage for American history and efforts from the forefathers that has shaper the science, history, and performance art of our country (Visit Virginia Beach.com, 2021).
- What cultural interactions did you observe, and what was important about them? For example, did you observe people from different cultures interacting in real life, and/or did you see exhibitions chronicling how different cultures and groups have interacted in history? Describe 2-3 examples in detail.
The cultural interactions that I observed were in the performance art. This performance art shows the differences and uniqueness of the cultural practices and way of life central to the diverse American people (Parker, 2016). The cultural interactions were evidence in the type of clothing that people wore, food, language, mode of interaction, and other aspects such as dancing. The museum has artifacts on how various cultures interacted in historic America, such as trade, settlements, and intermarriages (Parker, 2016). The interaction between the group members is part of the cultural interaction that involves the interaction between the members of the same racial groups. The second example is the interaction between the Americans and the visitors who came to America. This led to the exchange of cultural practices and beliefs such as religious beliefs, language, the introduction of new crops (Parker, 2016). Finally, is the interaction with the environment. For instance, the visitors were prone to malaria, which led to a higher mortality rate among the settler.
- What did you learn about the role, value, and challenges of diversity during your visit? Be specific and offer several examples.
The role of diversity is to help people from various cultural and religious beliefs to co-exists. It helps to appreciate the differences in beliefs and cultural perspective that acts as a barrier from such interactions. The value of diversity from the museum visit was to help build a strong sense of identity and well-being of Americans by uniting them based on the common history and to help them appreciate how the diverse people in the country strengthen the abilities, interests, and perspective of the American dream. Moreover, through appreciating this diversity, Americans have been successful in creativity, science, and innovation, as seen in the development of planes and other machinery used in American history.
- Would you choose to visit this institution/event again? Why or why not?
Sure, I will choose this institution again since it houses rich American history such as science and development, naval history, war, and cultural history and interaction. I would love to explore the historic home and museum in the famous haunted Virginia Beach.
