As discussed in class, quality has a variety of different definitions depending on the individual, the organization, or the industry. We discussed five different types of quality in class. For your assignment, I would like you to compare and contrast quality in health care versus a more traditional “business” field. Take an organization in health care and one in business (For this paper we will use the University of Utah Hospital versus Apple). Visit these organizations, review their published information, and interview their employees, customers, or administrators. With these, and other methods that provide information; provide detail on the following (but don’t limit it to just these questions): – How does each assess quality, both in their products and services? (this is where people miss a lot of points. remember every organization has multiple products, and the service is the provision of that product. be specific about what products organizations provide, and the quality they assess on them, then do the same with services). – What are the important outcomes, including those based on the quality types we discuss, that each is interested in? – Are there differences in quality required between the two different organizations you’ve chosen? Why? What other organizations mandate quality for the organizations you chose? – How do consumers provide their feedback on quality in each organization? What about employees? – What are the main strengths/weaknesses in how quality is assessed by each of these organizations? What changes would you suggest based on your knowledge of quality? An overall summary of what you learned would also be helpful. Interviews and specific references to company materials (websites, quality reviews, etc) are STRONGLY preferred.
