The Brief
You are asked to produce a report (max 3,000 words excluding references) including two
main components:
1. Critical analysis of a chosen organisation based on rigorous research
2. Innovation strategy development based on the above analysis
Deliverable no. 1: Critical analysis
An ability to extract good practices from the industries is important to your study and your
future career. Thus, this assignment is designed to encourage you to explore good practices
in terms of innovation development from any chosen organisation.
1.1. Data Collection: Research, select and describe a specific innovation, which could be
any types of innovation (dating back no further than year 2011) and the company or
organisation that is responsible for it.
1.2. Data Analysis: Based on your research, explain the innovation process focusing on the
quality of the output(s) and the management of the development process:
What is the big idea behind the development?
Who were the main target audiences?
What roles did design play in this innovation development?
How did output (e.g. a new product/service, a new brand position or a new business
idea) contribute towards an organisation’s mission, vision and/or objectives?
How did the output outperform similar solutions produced by competitors?
In the case of radical innovation, how did the output address latent needs and/or
exploit unexplored markets?
Deliverable no. 2: Innovation strategy development
Over the lecture series you will be introduced to the principles of strategic analysis, strategic
planning and a number of useful tools. As a result, this assignment also aims to help you
develop strategic thinking. Base on the analysis, you are asked to propose how the chosen
innovation could be developed further, e.g. expanding the market through differentiation.
Tools and Techniques
You may apply any strategic analysis and planning tools to support the first and second
components of the report, e.g. SWOT Analysis, Personas & Scenarios, Perceptual Map,
Four Actions Framework and 10 Types of Innovation. You may consider using key questions
proposed by Roger Martin to help you think about the new strategic direction(s). These
questions include: goal, scope, advantage, capabilities and management system.
Choice of Innovation and Organisation
There are no restrictions as to which, or what kind of innovation should be selected
(product/service innovation, social innovation, technological innovation, business model,etc.) nor what company, organisation or other institutions should be selected. They may be
large or small, commercial or not-for-profit, local or global, product-based or service-based.
Assessment Criteria: Demonstrate the ability to:
Critically review the chosen innovation and discuss its impacts on business
Critically evaluate the role of design in innovation development process
Use rigorous research to support the discussion and evaluate of the quality of the output
and the management of a chosen innovation development process
The assessment criteria are based on the Learning Outcomes required for the module.
