In order to demonstrate that you have fully met these learning outcomes you should follow the written guidance (below) carefully.
The public health essay recognizes the breadth of the Public Health agenda and comprises of a 2500 assignment that discusses knowledge of the local community in which you are working.
Title: ‘The midwife is a vital resource for health enhancement.’ (Dunkley-Bent, 2017: 299)
Discuss the above statement in relation to one of the following vulnerable groups and situate them within the demographic area where you are undertaking practice placements as a student midwife:
• Women who experience domestic abuse
• Women who have a low income
• Women from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnicities (BAME)
In writing this assignment you should consider the following key areas:
- The terms vulnerable groups and relevance within midwifery practice
- Address the challenges that this group may face within society
- Appraise the demographics of this group within your particular geographical area (e.g.: statistical information, trends within the population, services available to support this group within your area, local initiatives provided). This will support your rationale for choosing this specific group
- Select a health promotion initiative or initiatives, which involve(s) midwives and that addresses the health needs of the group. For example, support groups, specialist health professionals, targeted interventions etc…
Suggested essay structure:
Introduction (approx. 300-400 words)
- Your introduction should be used to explain to the reader the structure of the essay and what you are going to discuss.
- Use your introduction to tell the reader what your chose group is and state succinctly why you have chosen your vulnerable group.
- Tell the reader what the geographical area is and explain succinctly why it has been chosen.
- Explain to the reader that you will talking about the role of the midwife in relation to your chosen group and identify which relevant health promotion you will be talking about.
Main body (approx. 1800 words)
- Demography: Give more detail of the geographical area (i.e. the community) and its relevance to the identified client group. You can do this by finding key statistical information about the identified group in your local area and then comparing it to the national/regional picture. You may need to look not just for statistics about the group but also about unemployment statistics, statistics on ethnicity, indices of social deprivation, etc… Are there any ‘trends’ over time?
- Vulnerablity: Provide detail in relation to the chosen client group; elaborate further on why they are considered to be vulnerable or ‘at risk’. What are the risks or potential consequences to the woman, her baby and the wider family as result. How is evaluated or recognized?
- The role of the midwife: How can the midwife help identify and support the woman? Are there any screening tools or ways that the midwife can recognize who is at risk? Talk about this in the context of all stages of the childbearing continuum and at all contact points if appropriate. Does the midwife work with the interprofessional team or refer women to other services? Is there a specialist midwife role to support these women?
- Public Health Initiatives: Identify several (two or three) key health promotion initiatives that the midwife can either implement or make referrals to. Make sure you explain the role of the midwife in directing women to these initiatives or in implementing and evaluating them. Try to find the evidence that justifies the need for the initiative and/or that explains why it is effective. You may find it helpful to address each initiative in their own separate paragraphs.
Conclusion (approx. 300 words)
This should sum up the main points in your essay. You should not include any new information in this part.
Points to remember:
This is a piece of academic writing and not a reflective account. You MUST write in the third person throughout.
• You MUST use references throughout to support your discussion and ensure that a correct reference list as per the University of Northampton Harvard guidelines (see https://skillshub.northampton.ac.uk/referencing/) is provided. For a 2500 word essay you should endeavor to use around 25 references. These must be from a variety of authoritative and credible sources (e.g. peer-reviewed journals, text books, regulatory bodies and policy documents). Please do not rely on google searches. When using evidence, you should ask yourself: ‘is this the most appropriate and relevant source of information that I can find and can I explain why it is if asked to do so?’
•
• Please ensure that you maintain confidentiality throughout; DO NOT NAME A TRUST SITE. If you need to refer to your trust site (i.e. NGH, KGH or MKUH) you should refer to it as the ‘Local Trust’ Similarly any reference to your host site guidelines should be ‘Local Trust Guideline’. To breach confidentiality will result in a referral at the first opportunity; a fail at the second opportunity. When discussing the communities you are working in, however, you may refer to Kettering/Northampton/Milton Keynes.
•
• Remember to answer the essay question. The role of the midwife must be clearly identified throughout the essay.
•
• Essays will be marked using the UMF grading criteria. You must address all of the Learning Outcomes and write in an appropriate academic style in order to be successful.
• This is a significant piece of work. Good time management is key to maximise success.
• Workload issues are NOT grounds for extensions; you are expected to time manage and plan ahead.
• Do not leave it to the last minute to submit your work via Turnitin – problems with IT are not mitigating circumstances for late or non-submission of work.
• On the first opportunity, if you submit your work up to one week after the submission deadline your essay will be marked and is eligible for a capped grade of D- (minus). Work submitted after a week at the first opportunity or at any point after the deadline for the second opportunity will not be marked and will automatically receive a G grade.
