Capstone Plan of Study (POS)

Course Description

This course provides the student an opportunity to utilize leadership, management, and research theory and skills to identify a nursing problem and propose the implementation of evidence based solution to the nursing problem.

1. Capstone Project Nursing Problem:  

Shortage of registered nurses is an emerging issue that tends to affect the efficiency and quality of care.  The care facilities have to employ competent and experienced professionals to assist in meeting the escalating change of patient’s needs. For instance, registered nurses are critical in addressing asthmatic cases. The health of a patient becomes compromised as a result of having insufficient healthcare providers who are competent in preventing and controlling Asthma. Registered nurse turnover is another issue that has lead to shortage of registered nurses. The shortage of RNs emanate from work distress and poor working environment that overwhelms nurses. In addition, lack of a retention plan increases the turnover rate.

• Capstone Goal(s):
• Determining the current approaches that have contributed to shortage of registered nurses and turnover
• Establishing a retention plan
• Reviewing the facts of nursing shortage and nurse turnover
• Assessing the contributing factors to an escalating changes in asthmatic cases
• Conduct an in-depth research on the impact of RNs shortage in addressing Asthmatic cases and identify strategies that healthcare facilities can use to minimize the rate of registered nurse turnover
• Identifying Manager’s Approach Vs A Leader’s Approach on how to address the rate of  dissatisfaction
• Capstone Objectives:
• Understanding the effective strategies that  health facilities can use to minimize the shortage of registered nurses
• Be able to relate the mortality with turnover of nurses and design an assessment to determine improvement processes that can promote patient care
• Reviewing the nursing orientations to provide consistent information on working procedures and policies
• Identify and explore knowledge that can assist in providing a solution to reduce the rate of registered nurse turnover
