INTRODUCTION:
Little Havana, a part of the city Miami Dade County is home to many Cuban immigrant residents. It got its name from ‘Havana’, the capital and largest city of Cuba. Its ethnic distribution consist of 85.08% Cubans, 3.79% African-American, 10.14% White and 0.96% other races. It has a population of approximately 3000 with 94% of the population speaking language other than English on daily basis and 26% of its population includes elderly (age 65+).
It’s characterized by its street life, with restaurants, music and other cultural activities such Cultural Fridays, Three Kings Parade and others.
ASSESSMENT:
It is considered to be a poor country with 10% of its population unemployed and only 34% completed their high school. Most of its population is deprived of basic education.
Miami-Dade County has significant health and socioeconomic disparities to address. 44% of its population is not even health insured. Prevention Quality Indicator (PQI) data gathered from hospitalization and emergency room admissions reveal disparities in health observed across Miami-Dade County. Less than a fifth of the population is considered middle class. The city of Miami has one of the highest poverty levels in the country. Socioeconomic status, referring to poverty, education-level and racial segregation, significantly influences health care use (i.e. prenatal care) and health outcomes (i.e. heart disease, chronic disease mortality, and birth weight).
Heart Diseases, Cancer, Stroke, Chronic Lower Respiratory Diseases (including Asthma), Unintentional Injuries, Diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, Kidney Disease, Influenza and Pneumonia and Septicemia are leading diseases causing death.
PROBLEM SOLVING RECOMENDATIONS:
- Employment opportunities need to be created in order to have a healthy society. Unemployment and poverty is a root to a lot of diseases itself. A happy life is a healthy life and with ample amount of savings their residents would be able to benefit from the resources used in the curing of illness such as medicines and machines.
- Improving
- With healthy pays, their residents would be able to attend schools raising their literacy rate.
- Create tourism spots to enhance tourism in the country and attracting investors which would in turn increase employment opportunities.
- Inspect hospitals and local clinics to see if they match the standard health and care policy. Raise funds to improve health care conditions.
