Introduction

A self-assessment process provides a nurse in a practicum with an adequate opportunity to review what is learned during the nursing course, evaluate clinical and non-clinical skills, and create objectives and goals to achieve during or by the end of the practicum. For this clinical skills and procedure assessment, I will evaluate my review by identifying and explaining my confidence level, summarizing my strengths and opportunity, and using the experience and nursing theory to develop practicum goals and objectives.

A healthcare professional should be confident of performing clinical procedures to patients who have put their trust in nurses and their position. Therefore practicum is an excellent experience to learn new techniques and confidentially perform them entirely and independently. My confidence level to perform clinical procedures during my practicum is low. In the self-assessment, the selected rates are new and beginning with few, most confident and only confident, which shows my ability to perform procedures is low either the presence and supervision.

Following my low rating, I aim to work hard through the guidance of the supervisors and critiques from my receptor to achieve my target of being highly confident in performing all the clinical procedures at the end of my practicum. The rating from the self-assessment shows adequate performance being a practicum which is meant for learning. Based on my assessment results, my performance especially performing clinical procedures is warranting, and a lot of improvement is required. Besides the improvements needed, I have strengths that enhance my practice as a nurse. My strengths include my high levels of compassion for the care I provide in my profession. This enables me to go out of my way to help the patients through caring during their difficulties. For example, my ability to create a bond with clients and family by encouraging words, motivating others, and showing kindness. Another strength I being a great listener, which is crucial being a nurse for the last 20 years to be able to listen to the patient’s problems. Listening helps identify a patient’s pain and develop the best health approach to recovery through thorough quality care. Another strength is upholding professionalism in my work which involves setting boundaries with clients. Professionalism is a critical requirement to provide professional and quality services to clients without compromising their integrity and profession.

However, despite having a variety of strengths, some weaknesses can be turned into opportunities. In my case, the option available for improvement to provide quality care to a patient identified from my self-assessment includes a chance to prescribe different medications to the patient. Another opportunity is learning to be more proficient with clinical procedures, which I placed on the assessment form. To become stronger and better with differential diagnosis and documentation to achieve my responsibilities as a nurse.

Practicum Goals and Objectives

To grab the opportunity to use the skills, knowledge, and training I have learned throughout the course and effectively apply these skills and knowledge into my practice through the guidance of my practicum supervisor and receptor.
To obtain skills in time management during my practicum, I will apply them in all procedures and activities in the healthcare setting and my learning and asocial life.
To learn skills in resources management, be mindful of the cost and quality of the products at the end of my clinical practicum, and communicate with patients and colleagues to properly utilize the available resources to meet the needs of the populations ethically.
To accurately assess primary and differential diagnosis as they present during my practicum and prescribe the correct treatment and medication and make an accurate diagnosis about how it relates to neuronal ear VS infect ear at the end of my training.
To provide health promotion during my practicum to patients through education of prevention measures for the parents and awareness knowledge to identify common childhood illnesses early to effective treatment.

Conclusion

A practicum enhances clinical competencies, especially in manually performing different procedures by applying the theoretical knowledge learned in class. Conducting a self-assessment identifies personal strengths which can be used and weaknesses which are turned to opportunities to achieve the set goals and objective during or at the end of the practicum. Self-assessment creates guidelines for the practicum to ensure fulfilling the set goals and objectives to be a qualified, competent, and well-trained nurse by completing the practicum. Therefore this assessment at the beginning of my practicum provided me with a guideline of what to do to achieve what I wanted to achieve t the end of the practicum.
