SPC 4930  Summer 2022 Handout 2 (7/5)
Conflict Inventory Paper (200pts. in total)
Purpose:
This major, semester-ending project enables you to demonstrate some of the significant ways in which you’ve engaged with, and learned, within this course. It asks you to
identify, reflect on, and analyze via writing pertinent concepts/practices/theories/ideas
related to communication and conflict. Ultimately, the work allows you to reflect and
examine the ways in which communication and conflict shape your everyday lives.
Deadlines:
Final paper is due, uploaded to Canvas, by no later than 8/4 at 12 noon. I will need
to grade all papers and calculate course points totals and grades right away at the end
of the semester. Therefore, no late work will be graded. Please be sure to save your
work as a Word file, and pay careful attention to instructions.
Instructions:
This project engages you in inventorying and assessing significant aspects of your
conflict style and their impact on your, and others’, lives. You’ll write a 5-7 page double
spaced paper that is largely free of errors.

Part 1

The first part of the assignment is the completion of your journal entries. These are
meant to get you thinking and writing about conflict as it pertains to your lived
experience. You’ll work on this part of the assignment in the next couple weeks. The
entries are meant to help you get ready to complete the Conflict Inventory Paper.
Five entries are due to be uploaded to Canvas by no later than Tuesday July 26 at
11:59p. This deadline is extended to give you more time, so it’s different from the
one listed in the schedule. This is the final deadline.
The journal entry aspect of the final project is worth 25 points. Your entries do not need
to show polished writing. But they should show your thoughtful and thorough reflections
as related to ideas we’re learning on conflict.
For each journal entry, do the following:
*First, select 1 concept/theory/idea from our reading that stands out to you as especially
interesting and relevant to your lived experience.

*Second, provide a paraphrased definition of your choice. This might take a couple of
sentences.
*Then, provide an application of your choice to your life. This will take several
sentences. Be descriptive, in ways that help the reader (me) follow and understand the
application. You know you’ve reached the end of this particular task when you what
you’ve written shows the connection clearly and unambiguously.
*Finally, write an assessment that speaks to how your choice (the concept/theory/idea)
informs, shapes, influences your and others’ lives.
Please label each entry like this:
Entry #1: Personal History
(and then just space down and begin to write the entry)
Please do this for all five of the entries and leave a space in between each.

Part 2

Whereas Part 1 gets us going on the final project, Part 2 is the major part of the
assignment and is the only thing you submit at the end of the semester (given that, by
that point, you’ve already submitted the entries).
In thorough and thoughtful ways, respond to all of the following reflection prompts;
again, each aims to be a bridge between major course ideas and your lived experience:
1. Offer a paraphrased definition of conflict (Chapter 1) and provide an example of
conflict from your life that matches this definition. Make sure you include each
aspect of the definition.
2. Why do you believe it is important to study conflict? Also, more particularly, why
is it important to study conflict in terms of your life.
3.  What sort of “background systems” help to tell the story of your personal history
with conflict (p. 40)? Name the system and aspects that relate to your history and
then describe how they shaped the conflict within that system.
4. Which of the “negative views of conflict” and “positive views of conflict” are most
relevant to your lived experience and why?
5. The TRIP model describes the four types of goals pursued during conflict
(Chapter 3). Name and describe 1 type of goal that has been especially relevant
to an experience of conflict in your life, describe the connection, and then reflect
on the importance of that impact in your life (i.e., how the goals you and your
conversation partner pursued affected your, and the partner’s, lives.

6. How has power (Chapter 4) informed the conflict that you’ve experienced? Keep
the definition of power included on p. 10 in mind as you write your response.
7. Which conflict style best speaks to how you engage in conflict (see Chapter 5,
Figure 5.1)? In other words, how has a difference in conflict styles between you
and a conversation partner shaped how you experienced conflict with that
person? To answer this prompt completely, be sure to name and describe your
and the other person’s style, how the interaction/s happened, and what the
outcome was.
8. What specific strengths and weaknesses influence how you do, or do not,
engage with others in interpersonal conflict? I’d think 1 or 2 for each will be more
than enough. First, describe what each is and how it relates to how you and your
conversation partner handle conflict. Then, with respect to weaknesses, describe
why what you’ve described is a weakness/es and what you might be able to do to
work through, and grow from, the weakness/es.
Some important notes for all of the prompts:
*Please make sure you follow all instructions and offer an example to help illustrate your
ideas.
*There’s no need to make responses to the prompts relate and trying to do so will not
only add more work for you but also likely complicate your responses in unhelpful ways.
So, just respond to each prompt one by one.
That being said, there may be interconnections between them and if mentioning one
here or there, to help you in being thorough or thoughtful, then go for it. Sometimes
some students find success in using one example for the first prompt and then, where
fitting, calling it back in subsequent prompts. If that will help you, then go for it!
*Related, no introduction or conclusion paragraph/s are necessary.
I hope you enjoy the process of completing this paper. It fits with the topic, direction of
the class, and a shortened (summer) semester ideally. Plan ahead and tackle each
prompt one by one, and leave plenty of room for proof reading and revising, and you’ll
improve your process.
Finally, unless you share your work with someone else, I’ll be the only person who
reads this final paper. So, you can feel free to write about things, if desired, that you
might not normally write if sharing with classmates.
Let me know if you have any questions or concerns, or could you extra assistance. I’m
happy to help.
