Social-Emotional Intelligence
C1.
Advanced professional nurses (APN) can manage difficult situations in the workplace by using the power skills (social and emotional skills) of self-awareness, self-management, interpersonal communication, executive function, and social awareness. These skills can lead to de-escalation, effective communication, and an all-around happy work environment.
Self-awareness can provide the advanced professional nurse with an understanding of how others think, their attitudes, and their perceptions. (Western Governors University, n.) An APN that’s presented with a situation in which two individuals disagree can use self-awareness by using self-reflection to assess their feelings about the situation. Once this is complete, the APN will be able to make a non-biased decision on how to move forward with the situation and how it should be handled.
Self-management, the skill that is based on an individual’s ability to accept accountability for one’s actions, spoken, written, or acted out, is a skill used by APNs. Using self- management in a problematic situation, such as with an irate family member, the APN must use impulse control. It is never a good idea to engage on the same level as an angry individual. Through self-discipline, resilience, and stress management, the APN can deescalate the situation and get to the root of why the individual is angry.
communication. I would use self-awareness and interpersonal communication to achieve professional presence by taking a step back in any problematic situation and being aware of my thoughts, feelings, and possible biases; then, I could move forward in communicating effectively with compassion and care in order to find a solution to the problem.
Self-awareness and interpersonal communication can be used to enhance mindfulness. Both skills require the user, me, to pay mindful attention to body language, social cues, and awareness of the environment as a whole. Interprofessional communication ties in here in that I would use mindfulness in all communication with each team member to build healthy workplace relationships.
Interpersonal communication and self-awareness are how I would bring about a positive social presence to promote a sense of caring and belonging. Through teamwork and collaboration, active listening, optimism, and gratitude, my team would know that we will work together to find a solution no matter the problem or how difficult the situation. I would actively listen to whatever they have to say, keep a positive attitude, and show gratitude to them for bringing the issue(s) to my attention.
To create a culture of joy to solve incivility and initiate organizational change, self- awareness and interpersonal communication are vital. Civility can change the culture in an organization and, being self-aware and using interpersonal communication is how I would bring about this change. Forni (2021) stated, “Without attention, no meaningful interaction is possible”; because this rains true, I will use self-awareness to be present in all interactions being a beacon for those around me to look up to. Interpersonal communication includes compassion,
caring and consideration, and verbal communication. Using these skills, I, as an APN, will foster a culture built on civility to alter the culture of the workplace environment to bring joy.
C3.
As the APN, I would start by interviewing each team member and asking them the proposed question, “What matters to you?”(Perlo et al, 2017). I will take notes and write a list of suggestions. After the interviews, I would take my notes and use them to create a data table. I would then analyze the data to pinpoint the top three most frequent answers. I would take the top three impediments and use them to bring joy into the workplace; this will be accomplished using improvement science. I would implement the solution to the top three answers one by one. In order for the team members to get a good feel of each implementation, each solution would be implemented for a total of two months, therefore providing the team with enough time to experience the change as well as being able to reevaluate their level of joy and see if changes need to be made. After each period, I will conduct an additional follow-up survey to analyze the team members’ joy levels and get a feel of how comfortable they are with the suggestion that the interdisciplinary team and myself have currently implemented. After completing all three suggestions, I will take a concluding survey to see which of the three solutions to the impediments the team members liked the most. In taking all of these steps, I will not only be improving my team’s attitude towards the workplace, but I will also have worked with my team and collected their feedback. This approach will result in the team having a more positive outlook on their work environment because they were crucial.

Social-Emotional Intelligence

Advanced professional nurses (APN) can manage difficult situations in the workplace by
using the power skills (social and emotional skills) of self-awareness, self-management,
interpersonal communication, executive function, and social awareness. These skills can lead to
de-escalation, effective communication, and an all-around happy work environment.
Self-awareness can provide the advanced professional nurse with an understanding of
how others think, their attitudes, and their perceptions. (Western Governors University, n.d.) An

by using self-reflection to assess their feelings about the situation. Once this is complete, the
APN will be able to make a non-biased decision on how to move forward with the situation and

Through self-discipline, resilience, and stress management, the APN can deescalate the
situation and get to the root of why the individual is angry.

The power skill of interpersonal communication’s basis is in building relationships.
Through interpersonal communication, an APN can mentor nurses, engage in conflict resolution
for individuals that may not get along on the team, and lead a team effectively. If an APN is
faced with a situation within the team, the difficult situation can be handled by listening to all
parties involved, demonstrating care and consideration, and compassion; this will lead the team
by example of how one should conduct themselves no matter the situation.
Executive function skills require a different level of cognitive function. It allows an
individual to use critical thinking, problem-solving, and research to solve problems. An APN
would use the executive function in a situation that requires analysis, such as in a root cause
analysis for an adverse event within the organization. The APN would use critical thinking,
problem-solving, and research to find the event’s root cause.
Social awareness is a skill that incorporates empathy, responsibility to others, and
cultural awareness. An APN would use social awareness in many different settings and difficult
situations. Empathy should be given to patients as well as team members. The APN is
responsible for others; with this being the case, the APN must know how to take accountability
and be responsible for the team’s needs and patients and families.

As an APN, difficult situations will arise. Two social and emotional intelligence power skills
that can be used in the workplace to achieve professional presence, enhanced mindfulness, a
positive social presence to promote a sense of care and belonging, and culture of joy to solve
the problem of incivility and initiate organizational change are self-awareness and interpersonal
