- Summarize the research methods and results of the Ohio State and Michigan studies. How were the findings similar and different? What were the overall findings in the collaborative studies in the 1950s and 1960s?
Ohio State had their research done by doing a questioner and was given to hundreds of people in educational, military, and industrial settings; whereas Michigan did their research by giving attention to small groups. Both groups had different outcomes. The results for Ohio State they came our with two different types of behavior which have to do with organizing work, defining responsibilities, etc. and in Michigan’s study they found that they were more focused on the production were less focused with their employees. The 1950s and 1960s showed how leaders to combine their task and relationship to achieve the common goal.
- Compare and contrast Blake and Mouton’s managerial grid theory to the Ohio State and Michigan studies.
Blake and Mouton’s managerial grid theory focused mainly on how leaders help organizations to reach their purposes through two factors which are concern for production and concern for people. Ohio State has the same ideas with gathering the group together to reach a goal.
- Study the managerial (leadership) grid and explain the derivation of five major styles. Define each of these styles and explain how a leader with each style might be described.
The derivation of the five major styles all has to do on their work ethics and skills they have to offer. Also, it has to do with different ways of how they manage their areas. The country club management has a lot to do with the needs of people to create a comfortable work place. Team management has a lot to do with work accomplishment coming from committed people. Middle-of-the-road management is the leaders who are determined on doing a task and the people doing the task. Impoverished management is a leader who isn’t really involved. Authority-compliance management is leaders who have very big tasks and focus mainly on the leaders and not on the people who help.
- Explain the paternalism/maternalism style and how it is derived from the managerial grid.
- Describe as extensively as possible the behaviors associated with this style.
This leadership would be described as being associated with their group just to get their task done. They make their organization feel like a family.
- Can you think of any examples of well-known leaders who use this style?
I feel like someone who is running for any type of city councilmen or some sort try to get everyone together ot get to what they’re trying to get to.
- Is a paternalistic/maternalistic leader aware of his or her style?
I don’t think they’re aware of it, it’s just an instinct.
- How would a paternalistic/maternalistic leader score on the Style Questionnaire?
A leader who watches closely on their followers and very observant.
- e. What questions would you include on a questionnaire to assess the behaviors associated with this style?
I would most probably ask on how active they are with the organization and how involved they are.
- Explain the opportunistic style and how it is derived from the managerial grid.
- Describe as extensively as possible the behaviors associated with this style.
This is a leader who will do anything and everything to gain personal advantage.
- Can you think of any examples of well-known leaders who use this style?
I would say presidential candidate because they do anything to adapt to the situation they are in and figure out a way to get an advantage in the situation.

I’m sure they are aware of his or her style, knowing that everything they do is for their own benefit.

Would be very involved with their group, wouldn’t have problem talking to people, and stuff in matter.

How they interact with one another and how they communicate.
- Complete Case 4.1 (or 4.2. or 4.3) and answer all questions.
- Susan’s leadership is very determined and does get involved with her employees when she has the chance to.
- People think it’s crazy that she “eats standing up” they’re astonished by her hard work while others don’t like it.
- Due to the fact that it is affecting her personal life it would be good if she laid back a little to make sure she maintains a happy life style at home.
- I don’t think it would be good for work if she changed sue to the fact that the company is used to the way she manages but it just all depends.
- Rate yourself on the Style Questionnaire. Do your scores suggest that you are more task-oriented or people-oriented? Tell a story that shows how your behavior in one situation illustrated your dominant leadership style.
I believe I’m more task-oriented. The reason why is because I like to achieve my goal whether its on my own or with a group, I will figure it out. When I was given a project in one of my classes with a group, I took control and got everything together because I wanted to get it done.
- Is the “Impoverished management” style ever appropriate or desirable for an organization?
I really don’t think it’s ever appropriate because I feel like leaders should always be involved with their groups to succeed.
- Who is the best leader you know? The worst? To what extent does the style approach account for the differences between these leaders?
The best leader I know would be my high school coach because she was more than just involved with us on the court, she cared about our grades, our lives, etc. and she would do anything in her advantage to win.
