Goal

The goal of this assignment is for you to look at the health care entities around  you and create a case that could be used to teach someone financial concepts,  tools, and techniques about a major financial situation at that entity. By the end of this class, you will have worked through cases on two main themes – project management and cash flow. I am looking for excellent analysis and synthesis of course  concepts, tools, and techniques applied to a health care entity.

General Comments About Topic Choice

No matter the topic you choose for your case study, it needs to have issues for the  reader to solve. It is not just description. There is a situation or a problem and you  present the information to allow the reader to solve the problem/issue.The issues need to have options. It cannot be a problem with just one solution.  There needs to be several possible solutions and the Q&A guides the reader to best  (or better) one.It is very important to me that you pick a topic that is relevant and useful to you.  I despise busy work. I do not want this paper to be busy work for you. Please try to  find a topic that will help you in your career.Relate the topic to health care finance (and not just health care economics) – bring it  down to the level of the practice, hospital, provider, etc. A common mistake by  students is to discuss the topic at a broad level without ever bringing the topic down to  useable conclusions for a health care provider. Be sure to include how the  provider can use the case information to improve his/her business. In other  words, bring the discussion from the forest down to the trees and to specific trees. 
Remember – this class is about health care finance and not health care  economics or management. We want to know how it relates to the health care  firm and how other firms can use your conclusions to improve their businesses. 

Section 1: Presentation of Case Problem and Issues

Problem statement: A problem statement and the introduction are synonymous. In  it, one states the thesis of the paper. There are two parts, the general and the  specific. It depends on your writing style whether you present the general problem  first and then the specific problem or if you start it the specific problem and then show  how it fits within the general problem. 
Let us say for example that I am working on a case on clinics.  I could first talk about the shortage of practitioners (general problem) and then move  into the role of clinics in providing basic care for non-life-threatening aliments and for  routine well person care (specific problem).  I could also start with a discussion of how clinics fit within the primary care profession  (specific) and then show how that helps with the revenue and costs of the overall  system (general). Neither way is preferred – it just depends on your writing style and, in my opinion, the  issue. Sometimes I start general and move to the specific and sometimes I start with  the specific and move to the general. I like to start with whichever will grab the  reader’s (the reviewers and the editor of the journal) attention. The problem statement is your opening paragraph (maybe two). You can think of it  as the abstract of the paper. 

Presentation of the issues: This is a key part of the paper because it sets up the  Q&A in the last section. One presents the information that the reader will use to  answer questions and decide. 
• For the clinic example, I would now discuss a specific clinic in Canyon.

 • In this section, you present the information needed to answer the questions.

• In this section, you present the theories/concepts that the case addresses.You  might have introduced them in your problem statement, but now you provide more  detail to the reader. 

• You might want to include tables and charts to convey information to the reader.  here is no need to use valuable word space when a table/chart of data will  convey the information quickly.

•  If you have the relationship between the data, you can fabricate what you  need. Use a trick that faculty use – instead of $10,000, use $10,732. It looks  more specific and more realistic even if it is just made up.  
•  Remember – I have no idea what the correct number should be. I am  evaluating your presentation and use of financial concepts, tools, and  techniques that we have learned and used in this class. 
• Examples of case studies from prior semesters include:  
•  If you work in the health care industry, you might want to do a case on a topic with  which you are or have dealt.  
•  For example, I have had a student write about which equipment should be  purchased for a reassigned part of the hospital. This is a mixture of NPV,  breakeven, revenue management (reimbursement), cost of capital, and  cost control (staffing).  
•  For example, I have had a student write about staffing under different  circumstances and different parts of the hospital, which is a mixture of NPV,  breakeven, inventory management, and cost control.  
•  Some of the best papers are when a student seeks a health care individual and  writes a case on him/her/the business. 
•  For example, I have had a student write about the financial issues  regarding an emergency room, while another student discussed nursing  homes. 
• If you can get “private” information, do not worry. I will not share it with anyone. I  assume the data and information is not be shared. 
• If you work in an industry that is not health care, perhaps there is a way to use your  industry knowledge but apply it to health care.  
•  An IT professional might do a case on different servers or IT packages for a  health care entity. 
•  I have read ones on these that range from hardware issues to concerns  on security.  
•  A construction professional might do a case on a renovation of a health care  site. 
•  A recent paper looked at adding a wellness component to the hospital  and the usage needed for breakeven and then under the scenarios in  which NPV was positive.  
•  A human resources professional might do a case on the addition of new  employees or new employee training programs.
• I am very open to the topic of the case – just use the main financial concepts, tools,  and techniques and apply what you know to health care.
