· My Definition of Classroom Management
Classroom management is the practice that teachers engage in to have and sustain an enabling environment for the learners as they strive for academic achievement, alongside improving their social, emotional, and moral growth and development. Classroom management determines students’ success in a school setup (Nagler, 2016). A well–managed class yields high levels of discipline among students, entails good and effective communication between the teacher and learner, and fights for teamwork. Here, students are very comfortable in the classroom setting and are emotionally and physically rested. The teacher is always at the center of ensuring the management of classrooms with the help of their students. They ensure good organization in the classroom, instill discipline among students, and ensure students acquire effective communication skills throughout their learning. Self-management skills should be imparted to the learner as early they arrive in schools as this is one of the major goals of education other than academic achievement.
Learners are also key players in classroom management. A well-managed classroom setup should be learner-centered. They should be actively involved in classroom activities such as asking questions, answering questions, reading, body movements, and formulating their questions. The teacher should be keen while dealing with the students and give each student equal chances to ask and answer questions. This boosts students` learning morals. Students, therefore, learn harmoniously and in a conducive environment. To ensure effective classroom management, communication should be key. A teacher should maintain and promote communication among the learners and their teachers. This helps create a peaceful coexistence between the two parties. Communication enables the teacher to identify learners’ problems and provide assistance. It also enables the teacher to understand the learner’s psychology, which greatly helps teach.
· How do I want my Classroom to Look and Feel, Behaviorally Speaking? Most Important Aspects of Classroom Functioning to me
I would want my classroom to be organized so that each property has its correct position where it is kept and a proper sitting arrangement for students. An organized classroom seems appealing and attractive. It interests many and is admired. It also makes the learners acquire good personal, organizational skills. Secondly, I would want my class to be learner-centered, where I do little, majorly instructions, and most actions are conducted. This helps build their confidence and enables them to make the right choices. Through student participation, I can know the understanding level of each student and make adjustments and recommend where applicable. In case of misbehavior, the right actions are taken toward correcting the misbehavior (Middleweb, 2019)
I want my classroom to be engaging by incorporating visual learning aids in my teaching. According to Barrett et al. (2015), students become more engaged in their work and display the ability to remember what they learned when visual aids are used. Therefore, I would like my class to have images, short stories, known heroes, and leaders. This would enable my students to easily remember the concept taught by recalling some of the visual aids that were used. It also makes them retain the content covered. Each lesson should have appropriate visual aids to gain knowledge and impressions. Alongside the named required requirements for my classroom, I would also ensure a well-ventilated class with natural light. This is because a study conducted by Cheryan et al. (2014) showed that students exposed to more natural light outdo their colleagues who are exposed to less natural light in Mathematics and reading.
· My Main Responsibilities in Classroom Management
A teacher plays a crucial role in terms of classroom management. A teacher is fully accountable for classroom management. They play key functions in classroom management; Classroom organization, maintaining discipline among learners, proper communication with the learners, giving instructions, taking part in classroom design, coming up with rules guiding the classroom, and scheduling the class activities (Cini, 2017). The organization is among the crucial roles of a teacher. With poor organization, classroom activities are not likely to run smoothly. Therefore, teachers need to have a well-organized classroom and be updated regularly. Teachers are role models for students. Therefore, it is worth it when students emulate good self-organization skills during their schooling and later apply them in their lives during and after schooling.
Effective classroom management has to be effective communication as one of the teacher’s roles. It is important to have good communication between the teacher and the students in and outside the classroom. This helps the teacher gauge the learner’s psychology and understand what works best for the learner. It also creates a positive coexistence between the learner and the teacher. Through communication, teachers can help students in such cases of personal problems that affect the learners. This, in turn, shows the students how caring and concerned their teachers are about maintaining their well-being. Communication also encompasses linguistic skills such as accepted classroom language, gestures, emphasis where needed, and tonal variation. This aspect of communication makes learning interesting and enjoyable (Nagler, 2016). A teacher needs to motivate his learners by praising them whenever they do good and participating in other forms of motivation to ensure their academic success.
· My Student’s Main Responsibilities concerning Behavior and Classroom Management
As defined earlier, classroom management is the practice that teachers engage in to have and sustain an enabling environment for the learners as they strive for academic achievement, alongside improving their social, emotional, and moral growth and development. It is two-way traffic; to have effective classroom management, both the teacher and learners must be involved as the teacher gives directions. To have effective classroom management, the students have to take part in the following ways;
According to Newman (2019), a student is expected to have a personal accountability notion. This is seen in the scenarios where students are held accountable for their actions, mostly geared towards achieving positive values accepted in and outside the classroom. On the other hand, students are also liable for punishment in case of engaging in wrong actions or undesired activities. Students should engage in activities that promote positive school culture. They become morally upright students and create a good image for their societies; thus, education goals are also achieved.
Secondly, students should be active participants in the classroom (positive action blog, 2021). This shows their readiness to learn and their understanding level since students will ask or answer questions based on the content gained. Students engage in active participation in class by asking questions for clarity or formulating questions to be part of assignments, answering questions, and doing both classroom and homework assignments. This makes the teacher also adjust where necessary. Full and active participation of learners in class creates a positive environment for learning, enhancing the aspect of learning to learn.
