Persuasive Speech Outline
Title: Sunglasses are more than just a fashion statement, they are protection.
General Purpose: To persuade the audience.
Specific purpose: To persuade the audience that they need to wear sunglasses to protect
themselves from harmful UV rays.
Introduction
a. These days everything is about a fashion statement. When you go and
buy sunglasses most people want the high end designer labels like,
Gucci, Prada, D&G, Louis Vitan, etc. Do we ever stop and think why
we even buy sunglasses? According Dave Wallace (2008) from RayBan, most people don’t buy sunglasses for protection, they wear them
because they like how they look on their face. Sunglasses provide
protection for your eyes against the harmful UV (ultraviolet) rays that
the sun produces.
b. College students are among some of the most active people. Being on
a college campus most students walk to and from their classes not
knowing that their eyes are being exposed to harmful UV rays that can
cause long-term affects on there vision. In an article by Optometrist
Dana Johnson (2016), she asserts that long-term vision issues can
happen to those who wear corrective lenses and those who do not, but
you’re still in danger and taking a risk every time you walk out into
direct sunlight and have no protection over your eyes.
c. I wear corrective lenses and have experienced first hand the effects of
UV sun rays. My eye doctor constantly told me that it was crucial that
I protect my eyes when I am out in the sun because my eyes were very
sensitive to light. Of course I was young at the time and didn’t follow
the doctor’s advice and it made my eye sight worse from not
protecting my eyes.
d. I am here today to convince you that every college student should wear
the right kind of sunglasses because they are important protection for
your eyes. I will discuss with you:
i. Why sunglasses are the best source to protect your eyes from
harmful UV rays.
ii. That sunglasses don’t have to be expensive in order to protect
your eyes.
iii. Why sunglasses are most needed in places with a lot of direct
sunlight. (exp. desert terrain areas, beaches, places with a lot of
snow)
Transition: Let’s start with why sunglasses are the best source of eye-protection.
II. Body
a. The following information is from Dr. John Meadows article on the
effects of sun (2013). Sunglasses protect your eyes from UVA and
UVB ray that are the most harmful to your eyes. UVB rays can cause
damage to your eyes right on the spot externally and internally. UVB
rays that reflect sun off of water, sand or snow can burn the cornea or
the surface of the eye that can you leave you temporarily blind which
is a condition called photokeratitis (Meadows, 2013).
i. According to the article entitled “Hide Your Eyes” in Women’s
Sports and Fitness Magazine (2015), “about 99 percent of UV
light is absorbed by the cornea and lens”, and says Giovinazzo
M.D., Director of Ophthalmology at Staten Island University
Hospital in New York, “over time this can damage the layers,
potentially causing pterygium and even cataracts (a clouding of
the lens)”.
ii. Dr. Meadows (2013) stresses that UV radiation in sunlight is
commonly divided into UVA and UVB, and your sunglasses (if
the right kind) protect your eyes form those rays (Meadows,
2013). Sunglasses are the first step in protecting and preserving
your vision.
iii. Dr. Johnson (2016) also claims that having protection over
your eyes can help prevent serious eye problems like cataracts
and clouding of the eyes lens which happens over time.
Transition: Just because some sunglasses are expensive does not mean that they are
providing you with the right protection needed.
a. According to Consumer Reports (2017) the price of sunglasses does
not determine the quality of UV protection that you are receiving from
the lenses. Affordable costing sunglasses work just as hard and
effective if they meet the following criteria.
a. In an FDA Consumer article entitled “What to look for in a
Pair of Sunglasses” (2012) the author wrote, “Don’t assume
that you get more UV protection with pricier sunglasses or
glasses with a darker tint. Look for a label that specifically
states that the glasses offer 99 percent to 100 percent UV
protection. You could also ask an eye-care professional to test
your sunglasses if you’re not sure of their level of UV
protection.” (pg. 2)
b. In his article, Dr. Meadows (2013) also discusses Prevent
Blindness America, which is a volunteer healthy eye
organization that recommends the best colors for lens that
protect your eyes are dark grays, neutral grays, amber, brown
or green.
c. 100% UV protection are the best sunglasses to get and even
young kids should be wearing sunglasses. Not the play around
fake glasses most parents buy there kids but the actual
protection because there eyes are too at risk (Meadows, 2013).
Transition: We live in Las Cruces, New Mexico were the climate for the most is really
sunny and warm.
a. Dr. Johnson (2016) warns consumers to be aware of the places that
you live in UVB rays are common in areas where there are beaches
and oceans or snow terrain areas. Sandy places are also a high
common place for UVB rays.
a. When sunlight reflects off of snow, sand, and water, it actually
increases exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. These
invisible high-energy rays lie just beyond the violet end of the
visible light spectrum. Everyone is at risk for eye damage from
the sun year-round. The risk is greatest from about 10 a.m. to 4
p.m. Also, fishermen, farmers, people on the beach, and others
who spend time in the sun for extended periods of time are at
the highest risk.
b. Anyone who spends long periods of time in the sun puts there
eyes at risk, particularly those who do so near the water, on the
snow, or who take certain medications (including the Pill and
some antibiotics). (Johnson, 2016).
Transition: The fact that sun can cause harm to your eyes proves that it is crucial to wear
sunglasses and protect your eyes at all times.
