Weight and the Impact of its Perception on Fruit Eating among 9thGrade Leaners Abstrac tIn the United States today, there are many major health concerns that are affecting the health of the public. The issue of obesity and overweight are part of the major concerns whichare also among the leading factors that contribute to the causes of deadly diseases and deaths,and the impact is not only affecting the United State but the entire world. To reduce or managepeople’s weight, it is necessary to employ Healthy eating and physical activities, effectiveapproaches. The health of future generation of adults is at risk by the rising cases of Adolescentsand childhood obesity in our world today.The focus of this paper is to discuss the analysis of the relationship between the rate atwhich 9thgrade learners eat fruit and the impact on how their weight is perceived. In this study,both qualitative and quantitative research methods are being applied, which is called mixedmethods. A focused group discussion among the 9thgrade learners is provided for the purpose ofthe qualitative research while the quantitative research is completed using IBM SPSS version 28software to perform a Chi-square test and generate an output. Thematic coding, including wordcloud were used for the qualitative data analysis. The data were collected from the focused groupdiscussion. Based on the result of the Chi-Square, the association or relationship found betweenthe rate at which fruits are eaten and the perception of weight among 9thgrade learners isstatistically significant. This study has only one impact on healthy eating, which indicates itslimitation. therefore, future research is encouraged using more variable for further investigations

Introduction

It is necessary to implement a solution to manage the sporadic rise in the rate of obesity and overweight among children and adolescents. Even, CDC reported the prevalence of obesity among teenagers to be 21.1% with possible increase in rate (CDC, 2020). One significant solution for the management of adolescents and childhood obesity and overweight is healthy eating. Review of past studies on the perception of childhood and adolescents’ weights depending on diet or behavior showed that the total calories of food consumed by adolescentsand children contains a minimum of forty percent fats and added sugar (Sanyaolu et al., 2019)Also, a minimum of sixty-four percent of adolescents consume fruits as recommended (Moore etal., 2017). Moreover, it was discovered from other studies that weight has a significantassociation with diet and behavior among adolescents and children (Hahn et al., 2018).
