Abstract
Purpose Low social support during the perinatal period can increase the risk of postpartum depression and anxiety after giving birth but little is known about women’s trajectories of social support during this time. This study will identify trajectories of social support among women from second trimester to 4-month postpartum, and the characteristics associate with different trajectories.

Methods Data from the All Our Families longitudinal birth cohort was used to assess women’s perceived social support dur-ing their second trimester, third trimester, and at 4-month postpartum (n=3387). Group-based trajectory modeling was used to determine the number of groups, shape of trajectories, and proportion of women with differing trajectories. Multinomial regression was used to compare probability of group membership.

Introduction
Pregnancy and parenthood are the time of change, and thetime when people draw on their social networks for sup-port [1–3]. Higher levels of social support have been asso-ciated with fewer mental health symptoms, reduced risk of preterm birth, and improved child development [4–8].

While thereare difering views on what constitutes social support, for the purposes of this paper, we are defining social support as theresources and aid one receives from friends and family [13].Previous evidence suggests that social factors, such asincome and ethnicity can infuence women’s perceived levelof support [14–19]. The link between low income and lowsocial support may be due to several factors. Economicstress may lead people to perceive less social support, or to overtax support networks and reduce the availability of sup-port (social deterioration model) [20, 21]. The link betweenimmigrant status and low social support is not surprising, asthose who have moved to a new country may need time to establish new support networks.
